Welcome to my blog pages.  I will occasionally document some of my unusual wildlife photography experiences using this format.  When relevant, I'll try to include field notes and other information that might prove interesting to readers.

Pileated Woodpecker

March 12, 2012  •  1 Comment

I see pairs of Pileated Woodpeckers pretty often - maybe twice or more a week, especially during the late winter and spring.  They can be heard for quite a distance, both via their call and their hammering away on dead wood.  They move around looking for wood containing insects.  If they find a good log, they stay for quite a while and seem to be so engrossed in feeding that they forget about what's going on around them.  Too often, they are up high and don't offer good photo opportunities.  However, sometimes they can be found at ground level.  That's what happened on Friday.  I followed a pair around for about 30 minutes and finally caught the male hacking away on a fallen very dead log.  He didn't notice me while I managed to get behind a tree about 25 feet from him.  He could hear the camera auto-focusing and the shutter, but didn't actually see me for about five minutes.

I did get a shot of the female too, but not nearly as good as the shots of the male.  She has the brownish markings on her forehead and lacks the red stripe below the beak.

Hermit Thrush

I was a little lucky today.  I found a Hermit Thrush on my walk.  I'm certain it's the same one I've seen twice before, the 1st time in 2010.  I assume they have a relatively small territory because he's (guess it's a male) always been within about a 200 yard radius.  This one is very tolerant of humans.  I've been able to get withing 10 feet of him on three different occasions.  My shutter was a little slow because he was in the shade, but this one turned out OK.

Reston Bird Project

Zenfolio recently added an optional blog format for their account holders.  I don't plan to use it often, but when I have an unusual experience with the camera, I figured I might as well document it.

A few years ago, I acquired a bird list from Reston Association - Birds of Reston.  It was assembled by David Stewart and Odette James.  It is a valuable resource for anyone interested in bird-watching or photographing local species.  I've now been photographing wildlife in Reston for about four years, and thought it would add a nice addition to my web site to include a folder containing some of my best images of each species I've managed to capture with the camera.  Some images are good and some are not so good depending on the opportunity and my skill level at the time.  Regardless, to date I've found 69 species lurking about the pathways around Reston.  The photos are presented here:

The photos are sorted alphabetically by common name.  I've included more than one in some instances.  If the male and female are significantly different, I've included both when I have a photo.  In a few other cases, I've simply included one or two additional images that I liked.  My most recent entry is the Fox Sparrow taken on March 2nd, 2012 at Links Pond.  This is the first one I've seen in four years of shooting wildlife here, so it must be pretty unusual in this area.
